My Fair Mandy is a double-length episode and the 15th episode from season 5 of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.

Synopsis[]

It's the annual Scurvy Prevention Week at school and they are hosting the annual Little Miss Scurvy beauty pageant. The excited Mindy parades around on her own float and Mandy steps up to call her out. After Mandy was insulted by Mindy by her “ugliness”, Principal Goodvides encourages Mandy to enter the pageant and prove her wrong.

Mandy tells Billy and Grim about it, who made fun of it at first but they immediately agreed to help her win against Mindy. Eventually, Grim calls an old friend of his, Crabina, the best makeup artist in the Underworld. Crabina tells Mandy that to have any chance of winning the pageant, she must smile. As long as her friend Billy has known her, she has remained a "stone-faced deadpan snarker", even when she was a baby and he, along with Grim, decide to assist Mandy with her smile. Crabina gives some acting tips and applies some makeup to Mandy (who’s still a bit reluctant) with Sir Raven as the narrator.

Finally, the day of the Little Miss Scurvy pageant has arrived, and little girls are preparing their outfits while their mothers persuade their daughters to win it all. After Crabina lifted the paper bag off Mandy’s face, Mandy claims she looks ridiculous with makeup on, and Mindy sarcastically compliments her makeover and bragged about her career in winning pageants and tells her to “put that sack back on”. After Grim asked Mandy to turn her competitor into a stinkbug , Mandy answered “I wanna crush her on my own.” When Principal Goodvides reminded the contestants it’s almost showtime, Billy and Grim wished Mandy good luck and Billy adds, “And try to smile.” Carbina stayed behind and said, “Mandy, I have these words to say. You are a special girl, and what you lack in grace, you make up for it with fury. I believe in you.” And she applied a handful of gelatin-like plutonium jelly to make her smile.

After Principal Goodvides sang the pageant theme song off-key, he then introduced the three judges: General Scar,Captain Greengums, and Mindy’s mother. Principal Goodvides reminded everyone that the number one cause of scurvy is “ignorance”. Then, the contestants were introduced and they showed off their outfits. Throughout the competition so far, Mandy never donned a happy smile, much to Crabina’s frustration. And during one event, Mindy’s points were deducted, because she took her hand too early.

After Mindy performed her talent, it's Mandy's turn. She still refuses to smile as she sings out Over the Rainbow". During the act, her friends reminded her to smile as they held up signs. But it comes to the end of the song, where Mandy did smile. She finishes her song, and she forces a smile. However, they soon learn too late that by making Mandy smile, they had "messed with the natural order" when reality began to warp altogether. This causes everything to collapse, and Billy, Mandy, Grim, and Irwin are sent to the city of Townsville, the setting of the Powerpuff Girls. The main trio was the pint-sized heroines, setting out to stop Mojo Jojo from breaking into a local cinema.

And during the end credits, we see Irwin as Mojo Jojo as he struggles to take his belt off.

Trivia[]

  • The episode features a special guest appearance of Professor Utonium from The Powerpuff Girls, another Cartoon Network series.
  • According to an interview from the bonus DVD of the 2006 video game, this is Grey DeLisle’s favorite episode.
  • Mandy has actually smiled in previous episodes, such as Meet the Reaper, Opposite Day, Look Alive!, A Dumb Wish, Crushed and Test of Time. In all those cases, it didn’t have any dire consequences. However, those were all Grim & Evil episodes, so the writers didn’t create the effect yet.
    • Technically though, those were smirks and Mandy was smiling on her own accord, not because she had to do it, like in this episode.
    • Mandy does also smile in a few Cartoon Network bumpers and comic stories.
  • There is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. When the world implodes, an eerie array of colors and horrified expressions resemble the climax from the film.
  • During Mandy's talent act, she dresses like Dorothy Gale and sings "Over the Rainbow", a song from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
  • Mindy's talent act is based on a scene from the 1984 movie, Dune and later she performed as a circus acrobat.
  • When Grim says that he looked like a "total nerd", a picture of Jay Bastian is shown.
  • This episode premiered 4 months after the series finale of The Powerpuff Girls.
  • In celebration of Cartoon Network's 30th anniversary, the full episode was made freely available on the official Cartoon Network YouTube channel on November 6, 2022.
  • It’s unknown how Mandy as a baby was born in the flashback, It’s also presumed that she cried after she came out of Claire's tummy off-screen.
  • Mindy's pink pageant dress is very similar to Cinderella's mom's dress in the 1950 Disney movie, Cinderella.
  • The title of the episode is a nod to the Broadway musical and 1964 movie, My Fair Lady.
