The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy Wiki

After the opening credits for Grim & Evil and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, a small segment featuring Mandy on a pitch black background and says a random quote, either sardonic, menacing or downright weird in nature, generally related to one of the episode's segments. Every once in a while, another character besides Mandy would appear, and sometimes they would straight-up replace Mandy. Every so often, when the episode features no opening theme, Mandy's gag also is absent.

In the Season 1 (DVD), these segments are called "Mandyisms" in the special features.

List of Mandy's Couch Gags[]

Note: When Grim & Evil got split up and the "Billy and Mandy" segments were rerun as B&M season 1, some of the quotes were rearranged, such as the one for the pilot using a gag from season 2 (which is notable by Mandy using her design from that season), and since the compiled B&M segments only rendered 8 episodes, only a total of 8 gags were used on season 1 reruns, with some of the original ones from G&E being lost for years until the entire show made it into digital services. The following order is how the quotes were arranged in the classic Grim & Evil format, in chronological order and with Mandy using her design from that show.

Season 1A (Grim & Evil Era)[]

# Episode Mandy's Quote Quote Info
1 Meet the Reaper/Evil Con Carne (episode)/Skeletons in the Water Closet "Shut up, prepare for the show."
2 Opposite Day/Emotional Skarr/Look Alive! "It is useless to resist." By Darth Vader from Star Wars.
3 Mortal Dilemma/Evil Goes Wild/Get Out of My Head! "What are you looking at?" (Mandy slowly fades away, with only her eyes remaining visible)
4 The Smell of Vengeance Part 1/ Fiend is Like Friend Without the "R"/The Smell of Vengeance Part 2 "It's cruel and unusual." Amendment 8, Cruel and Unusual Punishment.
5 Devolver: Part 1/Recipe for Disaster/Devolver: Part 2 "Shouldn't you be playing outside or something?"
6 Tiptoe Through the Tulips: Part 1/A Dumb Wish/Tiptoe Through the Tulips: Part 2 "Happiness is a waxen two-headed baby."
7 Grim vs. Mom/Bring Me the Face of Hector Con Carne/Tastes Like Chicken "We all go a little mad sometimes." Quote from the movie Psycho.
8 Grim or Gregory?/Search and Estroy/Something Stupid This Way Comes "We're back! With a vengeance!" It is possible that this quote is a reference to the hiatus that Grim and Evil went through during the middle of season 1.
9 A Grim Surprise/Everyone Loves Uncle Bob/Beasts and Barbarians "Submit or be destroyed."
10 Hoss Delgado: Spectral Exterminator/Evil On Trial/To Eris Human "I want all of your garmonbozia!" It is a word originating from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which means "Pain and Sorrow".
11 Billy's Growth Spurt/The Time Hole Incident/Billy & The Bully "Sometimes you drink the milk, sometimes the milk drinks you."
12 Big Trouble in Billy's Basement/Christmas Con Carne/Tickle Me Mandy "Avert your eyes." When you watch this gag from a widescreen television, you can see that Mandy's lip syncing was not animated, due to the television screen format at the time the episode aired cut off her face from the bottom of her eyes. Possibly an animation oversight.
13 Little Rock of Horrors/The Pie Who Loved Me/Dream a Little Dream "Dance! Dance like you've never danced before!" Possibly a reference to Footloose and the fact that the three segments are music-related.

Season 1B (also Grim & Evil)[]

Note: Despite this season is the one where "Grim & Evil" was split in two series, this one was originally made and formatted as a season 2 for G&E. This season also had the same issues regarding Mandy's couch gag, with some of them being mixed in the B&M reruns, and some of them ended up missing in the process, not ressurging until the season was re-aired as G&E season 2 years later on demand. As with season 1, this will also follow the same format, but the episode order will be different: instead of the chronological order of B&M season 1B, it will instead be listed as the original order of G&E season 2, in order to fit all of the gags from that season.

Maxwell Atoms' "Black Mandy" posts.[]

In the first few months of 2018, Maxwell Atoms created a "Black Mandy" hashtag on his social media (such Tumblr and Instagram), which consisted of weekly posts of drawings featuring Mandy doing a random action while her dialogue is transcripted above her head, presumably a spiritual sucessor to her Couch Gag from the original show. There's a total of 8 of them as of right now.

Date published Mandy's Quote Quote Info
January 18th, 2018 (Wearing a winter gear, pointing a laser to something off-shot)

"I don't hate your guts. They're the only thing keeping me warm."

This is reference to a scene in "Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back", in which Han Solo places Luke Skywalker inside the open body of a dead Tauntaun for warmth against the extreme cold. Mandy is depicted in the same jacket Han wears.
Januray 25th, 2018 (Dark energy emerges from Mandy's eyes)

February 22nd, 2018 (An apocalypse happens in the background, and Mandy is being surrounded by tentacles)

"In a few years we'll all look back on this and say 'those were simpler times.'"

March 1st, 2018 (Holding a chainsaw, Mandy is wearing someone else's skin on her face)

"Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the analog face-swap."

Mandy reffers to the Face Swap app, which allows people to switch their faces on pictures.

Episode Mandy's Quote Quote Info
Billy and Mandy Save Christmas

(Mandy appears dressed in a Santa suit)

"Bah, humbug!"

Ebenezel Scrooge's catchphrase in "A Christmas Carol". The foot that crushes Mandy is similar to the one featured in the title card of Crushed.
Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure (Mandy wakes up and realizes she's trapped in the setting of the couch gag, bounded by an inivisible wall, which is the viewer's television screen.) "Let... me... OUT OF HERE!!!!!" (Fades into the background) This gag is not featured on the opening of the movie itself, but is actually refferenced during the scene when Mandy goes through a sequence of multiple nightmares after being kidnapped by Boogey Man.
Billy & Mandy: Wrath of the Spider Queen "I don't believe in happy endings."

(This second gag appears when the second part of the special is played on demand.)

"Exit, stage left!"(Leaves the scene at the left tap-dancing. A car crashing sound can be heard.)

This special is the only one which has two gags: one for the first part, and another for the second part (exclusive for streaming services)

Episodes without the couch gag[]

Trivia[]

  • In a Cartoon Network Power Play game called "Freaky Freezeday", there's a parody of the couch gag with Billy stating that he's not wearing any underwear.
  • Accourding to Maxwell Atoms on Tumblr, he stated that Cartoon Network usually takes two segments of their shows and "remixed" them in order to make "new" half hours. As a result, Mandy's couch gag slowly became less related to any to any particular segment (or segments) in later seasons.
